This bar/blues club in the heart of downtown Hartford also makes kick-ass barbeque, which is why readers most always deliver victories in this category. Black-Eyed Sally's ribs undergo a romp in the restaurant's own spice rub, now available for purchase at the restaurant. But there's much more than ribs at Black-Eyed Sally's. The pulled pork sandwiches are to die for, featuring meat smoked for four hours, served on a soft bun with coleslaw, pickles and barbeque sauce. "It's the best sandwich you can get in Hartford," general manager Doug Kelly says. And on Sundays, check out the all-you-can-eat ribs and BBQ chicken special for $15.95.     When James Varano put Black-Eyed Sally's BBQ & Blues together, it was with the ambition of making it just like the kind of blues and ribs clubs that he'd been to in Memphis. So not only is Black-Eyed Sally's one of the most popular restaurants in Hartford, but Black-Eyed Sally's is also one of the premier blues clubs in the Northeast. "We get the real deal, the authentic blues, people who've never been to Hartford before, and we fly them in," says Varano. That includes acts like Shemekia Copeland and guitarist James Armstrong. Right now, Black-Eyed Sally's is cutting its first album with guitarist Phil Guy. Look for a possible cameo appearance from Phil's more famous brother -- Buddy Guy.

    If you like to get down and saucy with your ribs, then Black-Eyed Sally's is the place to go. This is a not a place for rib pussies. No baby back ribs here. Black-Eyed Sally's serves only St. Louis pork ribs -- that's the first cut and B-I-G. "It's larger so it's meatier," says owner James Verano. It's also fall-off-the-bone tender. Black-Eyed Sally's orders 200 cases of these ribs at a time, and hundreds of pounds of brisket and pull pork. Time to dig in!

    Displaced southerners and barbecue fans north of the Mason Dixon Line threw a party five years ago when Black-Eyed Sally's opened its doors. Finally, a place to get real southern barbecue. Owner James Verano took his inspiration from the annual barbecue cookoff in Memphis, Tennessee. After spending a week there, eating more barbecue than you could shake a drumstick at, he came north ready to make the best barbecue in the area. The key to good barbecue is "slow and low," says Verano. "Up north people don't really know barbecue," he says. "They're thinking about summer, throwing some stuff on the grill. That's grilling." At Black-Eyed Sally's, they smoosh in some dry rub and let it sit overnight. Then they use hickory and apple wood to smoke the meat right on the premises. Pork, beef ribs, beef brisket, pork butts, chicken, sausage -- they do it all. Black-Eyed Sally's also makes all its own sauces. Fans will be happy to learn that two of their most popular sauces, Cajun Beer and Blackjack Molasses, will be available in area stores soon. So will the barbecue rub and two of their hot sauces.
